Housing coalition partners call for housing production to close homeownership gap for communities of color

LOS ANGELES (June 8) – CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® (C.A.R.) President Dave Walsh, California Building Industry Association Senior Vice President Michael Gunning and Habitat for Humanity California Board Chair Maureen Sedonaen issued the following statement in response to the Assembly and Senate budget priorities released last week:

“California must do all it can to measurably address our state’s housing crisis that disproportionately impacts communities of color. At the most basic level, that starts with building more housing for homeownership. Increasing homeownership for middle class and lower income families is the best path to closing the ever-persistent housing security and wealth gap between white Californians and Black and Latinx Californians. The problem is there’s just not enough homes available in our state.

“With this year’s record budget surplus, the Governor and the Legislature have a historic opportunity to increase equity in homeownership by funding new housing supply for Californians of all backgrounds. The Legislature’s proposed budget fails to include any investments to increase the supply of homeownership housing, missing this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to beat back our housing crisis and create a more equitable housing future for all Californians. We’re asking the Legislature to do right by California: make smart investments to build more homes and close the wealth gap.”

Leading the way…® in California real estate for more than 110 years, the CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® (www.car.org) is one of the largest state trade organizations in the United States with more than 200,000 members dedicated to the advancement of professionalism in real estate. C.A.R. is headquartered in Los Angeles.
