REALTORS® announce support for Senate Pro Tem housing production package

LOS ANGELES (May 21) — The CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® (C.A.R.) issued the following statement following Senate Pro Tem Toni Atkins’ announcement of a housing production bill package:

“We have known for years that there is a tremendous need to get serious on housing supply if we’re to make any progress in solving the state’s housing affordability crisis. We appreciate Senate Pro Tem Toni Atkins’ acknowledgement that increasing supply is the solution to California’s severe housing shortage. The Pro Tem’s leadership through the introduction of a housing production package is a strong step forward to putting our state on the right track toward building more housing in the places that need it the most,” C.A.R. President Jeanne Radsick said.

“These five housing production bills tackle longstanding obstacles to building housing in California like streamlining California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) approvals, allowing denser development in urban areas and rezoning retail properties for housing. Taken together, these bills have the potential to usher in a new era of housing creation for California — and it could not come at a more critical moment in our state’s history. As we evaluate and navigate the long road of recovery amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, housing must be a top priority for lawmakers. Without a thriving housing market with plentiful supply to match growing demand, our state’s future is at stake. We look forward to working with Pro Tem Atkins, the legislature and Gov. Gavin Newsom to seeing this package cross the finish line this year so we can provide the housing supply that Californians so desperately need and deserve.”
