C.A.R.’s June Barlow Named Housing Wire Woman of Influence

C.A.R. General Counsel and SVP June Barlow has been named to Housing Wire’s annual Women of Influence list, which recognizes women leading the mortgage and housing industry forward.

Barlow has served as C.A.R.’s chief legal officer for more than two decades. In her role as general counsel, Barlow ensures that her team of 31 attorneys and support staff deliver superior legal services for C.A.R. and its for-profit subsidiaries. She supervises all transactional and litigation activities, in addition to corporate governance, human resources, and intellectual property matters. Barlow is also a key member of the organization’s management team, providing pivotal and valued guidance for the internal operations of C.A.R. including the organization’s by-laws, PACs, human resource issues, retirement and investment plans and C.A.R.’s business subsidiaries.

She recently led her team to swiftly complete the groundwork for C.A.R.’s Disaster Relief Fund following the devasting 2018 California wildfires. The charity, which accepts donations and offers housing assistance grants to those who lost their homes in the tragic fires, provided more than $1 million in disaster relief grants to REALTOR® family members and others affected by the fires to provide financial assistance with mortgage relief or temporary housing.

In an effort to address California’s housing crisis, Barlow created a new legal foundation, Californians for Homeownership, to represent the interests of Californians in need of affordable housing and fight NIMBY (“Not in My Backyard”) policies. Under Barlow’s direction and guidance, within months of its inception, Californians for Homeownership filed a motion to intervene in a lawsuit supporting development of a new 260-unit housing project in Berkeley, Calif. The Foundation has also advised cities throughout the state to comply with the Housing Accountability Act and urging them to approve local housing development projects.

In her role as general counsel, Barlow oversees a team of 31 attorneys and support staff, ensuring they deliver superior legal services for C.A.R. and its for-profit subsidiaries. Her team of Legal Hotline attorneys answer hundreds of calls from members every day, giving personalized legal advice on transaction-related questions and responding to inquiries that may touch on Department of Real Estate regulations, probate law, community property law, landlord-tenant law, and other areas of the law.

Highly regarded in the real estate brokerage community, Barlow is often the first call when a critical legal issue emerges. Her ideas and opinions are regularly sought by counsel of large real estate brokerage firms, her counterparts nationwide, lawyers in private practice, and other peers.  She inspires and motivates her staff and colleagues to work together in support of the real estate profession and beyond. Her passion, integrity and humility are marks of a true leader.
