Three California REALTORS® Named Good Nieghbor Awards Finalist

Three California REALTORS® were among the 10 Good Neighbor Awards finalists for 2003, NAR announced recently. The Good Neighbor Awards, in its fourth year, recognizes theongoing efforts of REALTORS® who make exceptional contributions to improving the quality of life in their communities. The California REALTOR® finalists are:

Jim Bess Sr. of Blue Chip Real Estate in Apple Valley works year-round to raise money and buy toys for children who might not receive any Christmas gifts without his efforts. Founder and president of Victor Valley Toys for Tots Inc., Bess and his organization have touched more than 20,000 families in 16 years, including almost 3,000 familieslast year alone.

James Pacheco of Prudential California Realty in Castro Valley has helped low-income, elderly, and disabled people repair and renovate their homes since founding a local chapter of Christmas in April 10 years ago. Since last year, he hasvolunteered almost 2,500 hours and led 200 volunteers on 21 projects to repair homes, schools, and an Alzheimer's day care center.

Scott Swendiman of Swendiman & Associates in Redding founded Wesley Neighborhood Inc. to clean up a blighted neighborhoodsurrounding his church. In two years, the group rehabbed 16 homes, with much of the labor from Swendiman himself, to create decent affordable housing and reduce crime in the area. The group also recently opened a family resource center.

Five winners will be selected from among the 10 finalists and will be announced in the November issue of "REALTOR® Magazine."  The winners will receive travel expenses to the REALTORS® Conference & Expo in San Francisco in November, national media exposure for their community causes, and a $7,500 grant for their causes. Five honorable mentions each will receive a $1,500 grant.
